Garage Door Repair Long Beach: My Sad Garage Door Story
November 13, 2014 Garage Door

I live in the Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach and have all my life. We have lived in the same house for thirty years and during that time I have installed one new garage door and have had our garage door repaired on four of five different occasions. I say this so you will understand why I know a thing or two about the the subject of garage door repair Long Beach style.

Last Fall I had just finished up all of the raking chores for the season when my wife called out the door to tell me I had a phone call. I inadvertently placed my rake across the track of the garage door to go inside and take the call. When I hit the button to close the garage door, the rake became wedged in the mechanism somehow and all hell broke out.

Since it was an older garage door, it did not have the sensors in place to notice the rake. As the door tried to shut it exerted pressure on the rake — and this pressure kept building up. Eventually the track bent, several rollers popped off, and two bolts popped out of the bracket which held the frame to the roof.

I knew I was in trouble. In an effort to save money I went online, looked up garage door repair Long Beach, and tried to find the cheapest service available.

That was a big mistake.

A technician from the company I called came out, took one look at the door, and grabbed a sledge hammer out of his truck. He then started pounding on the frame and told me to take two steps up on a ladder and hold the door at the spot he designated. “Hang on tight, because if this thing comes loose, the door is going to come down fast!”

What? I’m 67 years old, paying for the service of an expert, and am told to stand on a ladder and hold up a very heavy garage door that is about to come crashing down?

By the time he was done he had taken the garage door apart and the pieces were laying all over the garage floor. He then told me he had completed his job, I was now “out of danger,” and I owed him $100! He suggested I hire the company that installed the door to put it back together.

Needless to say he did not get my money and was quickly issued an ultimatum to get off my property!

Then it was back to the Internet and another search for Garage door repair Long Beach. This time I hired the company that originally installed the door.

When the technician arrived he saw the mess on the garage floor and could not believe it. He said his normal service fee was $125 and for that he would have had the door repaired and working within an hour.

Well, it ended up costing me $250 to have him put the door back together, labor and new parts. He did very efficiently, without any outside help.

My lesson was well learned. Always call an expert who you know can do the job right. The extra money you spend is well worth it!
